SHARP – SH-01C Display and keypad features

The article will provide a user with information on SHARP – SH-01C’s display and keypad features.

The controls are right on the touchscreen whether the phone is open or closed. It supports multitouch and several desktops together with a kind of multitasking. These are just a few of the features that make the phone so easy to use.

The screens size is 3.4″ and the resolution is 480×854 which is has become a standard for this kind of devices. The screen can display up to 16 million colors and it is made of plastic.
The display is securely fixed to the sizeable hinges that allow it to rotate 180 degrees. Unlike some old similar phones SH-01C has no special room left for rotation of the screen and it works fine solely because of the clearance between the display and the lower part of the handset.

Video call camera
Above the screen to the right of the speaker is a video call camera. In GSM networks it is only good for taking auto portraits. The front camera has the following available resolutions:
• QCIF (176×144)
• QVGA (240×320)
• VGA (480×640)
• WVGA (480×854)

Light sensor
Under the screen to the left there is a light sensor that determines the lighting conditions. The power saving settings (EcoMode) allows a user to save a lot of the battery charge by turning on the auto brightness adjustment,

Key Pad
The large keys are placed apart from each other making key pad very easy to use. The black Docomo SH-01C is the only one of the three colors available that has a blue ring around the navigation button – the others some why have a white ring.

The backlight of the key pad is quite unusual: instead of a regular solid white light of all the keys the phone has a white mesh with round holes and that look like cells. It creates an interesting visual effect and in darkness the key pad looks great – just look at the pictures.

Under the key pad there is the mic and awesome silicone bumpers for the upper part of the handset that prevent screen from touching the keypad which often happens in some other flip phones and the key pad leaves a distinct print on the screen

Sharp Docomo SH-01C

SHARP – SH-01C has  dust and water resistant body, WiFi, a big 3.4″ rotary screen with AQUOS technology, an excellent 14.1 MPix CCD camera capable of Full HD recording (1920×1020) and much more.

In order to make the phone work with any GSM carrier a user should have at least the handset, a charger and a hypersim for unlocking the GSM module.  The phone’s gradient color pattern from black to blue on the front side of Docomo SH-01C looks attractive. In the settings a user can specify the pattern and the color of the light indicator.

The handset itself is big – 112x50x16.8 / 4.4×1.97×0.66 mm and it feels like a completely solid plastic bar and sits well in hand.  All the surface of the phone is glossy and the front side of Docomo SH-01C is a solid flat piece of plastic without any texture. When under sunlight the colors become very deep while indoors the colors alter depending on how much light there is: from dark blue to violet, the phone is practically a chameleon.

Between the black and the blue of this surface there is a 192×64 1.4″ monochrome screen. A User can choose between three display modes. Under the display there is the spectacular array of LEDs.  On the left side of the phone there is a micro HDMI slot protected by a lid with rubber sealant. The lid actually works and prevents water and dust from getting inside so feel free to make underwater pictures. Closer to the bottom of the handset there is the slot that connects the phone to the dock station. It is also protected with a similar sealant only this time it seals it from the inside. In the top corner there is the strap hole

On the right side there is nothing besides the camera button and the digital TV antenna. The shutter button works just as in other modern phones: first a user can focus and then shoot.  The battery life time heavily depends on how much a user use WiFi, music player, the screen brightness level, how often a user uses the camera etc.

The water resistant body will protect all main components like the battery contacts, the circuit board etc.  The battery lid of Docomo SH-01C is shock resistant and it has a rubber cushion and a lock that tightly fixes the battery to the handset creating a vacuum cushion.

Windows 7 – MS Exchange

The article will provide a user with MS Exchange information for the Windows 7 phone.  There is a system of invitations. If someone sends a user with an invitation a user can view it and by clicking on it go to the calendar. Besides the mail a user can sync the address book and the calendar. A user can choose what kind of data he/she wants to sync with the MS Exchange account: mail, contacts or calendar.

Mail Viewing
The mail client displays both standard messages and html messages without any problems. In case of html to download picture a user has to click on any picture inside the letter and then they start downloading.
Working with Text inside a Letter
In the upcoming WP7 update a user will be able to copy a text and then to insert it somewhere else e.g. in a document or in the address bar of the browser. For example, when a user clicks on a word a copy icon appears that allows a user to copy the selected text to the buffer; to the left and to the right of the word are the arrows by dragging which a user can select and copy bigger passages.

The Screen Key
The key pad in Windows Phone 7 has four lines of characters and no additional symbols: one button – one character. There is a key that switches to typing of additional characters. There is an emoticon insert button, the Space key, Backspace and Enter.
In the landscape mode the key pad becomes a bit wider but does not take the whole screen’s width. So there is no significant difference between the portrait and the landscape orientations of the key pad – they have the same level of typing comfort.

When a user types a character it is displayed in the pop-up field right above the key, so when a user covers a key with a digit then a user can always see the character that he/she is typing.

A key stroke is confirmed by a sound without vibration.  The key pad differs depending on the fill-in field. For example, for text messages there is the smile insert key left to the Space key, in the browser the same key stands for quick insert of “.com” and if a user presses and holds the “.com” button for about a second a user will see a pop-up menu where a user can select the domain: .org, .edu, .net.

If a user presses and holds a word in the fill-in field a user will see the cursor that a user can use to fix the typos or just move through the text to add or edit something.  In order to keep the word that a user has typed a user has to press the space after it.

Windows 7 Phone – Mail and Messaging

The article will provide a user with information on mail and messaging function of the Windows 7 phone.

On the lock screen new messages icons are displayed at the bottom, on the system tray there are no such notifications. The number of new messages is shown inside the respective tiles: e.g. inside the Gmail tile, MS Exchange tile or the SMS tile.

The SMSes are displayed as chat lists; every chat is captioned with the latest message. In the common SMS window every chat displays the contact’s phone number or his name, below – the latest message or its part that fits two lines. Unread messages can be discriminated by the colour of the message text below the contact’s name: the unread messages have the colour chosen as the theme colour: red, green etc.

If a user opens a chat then he/she may see the whole correspondence with the contact. At the top a user will be able to see the contact’s first and second names and under is the list of messages. The contact’s messages are aligned to the left and users messages are to the right. Under every message there is the receipt or send time.  A user has got opportunity to read or write messages either in the portrait or landscape orientations. When a user turns the smartphone the system automatically changes the orientation of the screen and the keypad.

Let us have a look at the mail system in Windows Phone 7. In contrast with Android there is no account grouping, that is, if a user sets up Gmail and e.g. Hotmail accounts they both will work through the same application.  The mail is sorted into a list and every entry features the name of the sender in large print, below is the letter’s theme and its first line, to the right – the receipt time and week-day (for older letters).

A user can mark the messages and for that a user has to carefully press the empty space to the left of the needed message. Once one message is marked there will be a tick box next to every message that allows a user to mark the messages.

Windows 7 phone – Call log function

The article will provide a user with information on Windows 7 phone’s call log function.  A user will be able to see all the recent calls to the left in the phone icon.  Towards the right is the contacts name and below is the call type (incoming, outgoing, missed), the week-day and the time of the call.  The missed calls highlight the name of the contact in a cheerful colour

The call list shows the calls for the last week. The calls from one contact are not grouped.  A user cannot look up any call details.  If a user clicks on the phone icon then it will dial the contact’s number; if a user clicks his/her name then he/she will be able to see the profile window. If a number from the call log is absent in the address book a user will be able to see the profile window anyway.

Missed calls
If the screen is locked the missed call info is displayed as an icon at the bottom of the lock screen.  On the home screen a missed call is displayed inside the Phone tile.

Ringtone and Profiles
Windows Phone 7 does not have sound profiles. At home a user will be able to put the music on pause, set an alarm clock on the WP7 device.

A user should be aware that if he/she listens to the music at volume levels of 10-12 (out of 30) a user can miss every call until he/she sets the volume at 25 or higher.  The call volume can be adjusted during a conversation or a call, the volume slider is placed at the top near the common for the ringtone and media volume slider.  If a user presses the volume key then he/she will be able to set the phone on vibration or ringtone by pressing the icon in the pop up menu.

A user will be able to choose the tunes for the ringtone, SMS or mail only among the standard sounds.
